Entry and Stay Information
What is the minimum validity required for a travel document? To enter Tunisia, your passport or temporary passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date. If you do not have a return ticket, the required validity extends to 6 months. In case of a lost passport, you must report the incident to the local police and contact the Consular Department of your Embassy to obtain a temporary passport for your return.
Do I need a visa to enter Tunisia? Citizens of the European Union and the United Kingdom can enter Tunisia visa-free and stay legally for up to 3 months from their date of entry.
Are there any additional entry requirements? Your passport must be in good condition and free from any damage or signs of tampering. Mechanical damage, illegible personal data, unclear stamps, or blurred visas may lead to lengthy verification processes or even denial of entry at the border.
In Tunisia, registration is mandatory. If you're staying at a hotel, the staff will handle your check-in process. However, if you're visiting privately, the host must register you at the nearest police station to their residence. If you are eligible to stay beyond 90 days (for example, as a spouse of a Tunisian citizen, a work permit holder, or a student), you'll need to apply to legalize your stay. Typically, a residence card (carte séjour) is issued for one to two years. Detailed information about the process can be found here. If your stay exceeds the 90-day visa-free period, be prepared to pay a fine of approximately 20 dinars per week when departing through border control.
Additionally, if you hold a residence card, you are required to purchase a 60-dinar tax stamp each time you leave the country.
Customs Information. You do not have to declare at the border the amount of money you are bringing in up to the equivalent of 5,000 dinars. There are no quantitative restrictions on the exchange of foreign currency for local currency. The import and export of Tunisian currency is prohibited. Violation of the ban may result in severe consequences. Unspent cash must be exchanged for foreign currency before departure, upon presentation of your boarding pass and proof of exchange of foreign currency for dinars (banks at airports are open 24 hours a day). You can exchange no more than 1/3 of the previously exchanged amount and no more than 100 dinars.
You can bring: 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 2 liters of alcohol below 25%, 1 liter of alcohol above 25%, two photo cameras, one recording camera. Customs officials interpret Tunisian regulations differently. We suggest that you report any photographic equipment you bring with you (cameras, films, discs or video cassettes).
